This is Jer's prize winner, Mt. Dora, Florida show -won 1st in 3D, and in Jupiter's ArtiGras won 1st in wood. Next we go to Tampa and then St. Petersburg, Florida. Only 4 shows this season, still has the day job.
I have started back to my Thursday group, what an amazing group of artist, Get so inspired. I am working with fluid acrylics and watercolor. Cant find my gouache. Want to get some of that Aqua board, wipes off really nice.

For Christmas my son made me an easel, (billboard) with tube lighting. The only problem my paintings are all too big. It really isn't a problem, I have been wanting to display this giclee for over 2 years (no more wall space) and this easel is perfect!!!!!! Love both!!!! Giclee by C.L. Went to Art Miami yesterday, what a treat for the eyes. We saw the complete show, and were we tired. Across the street was Red Dot, but we were just too tired. Drove to Hialeah horse track and watched the Quarter horses race. I love that place and am so happy they are not going to tear it down.

Pictured- a sculpture outside the building, I thought I would play around with Microsoft Picture it and change the color.

I love this quote, I have problems translating what I want to say, my art seems to do what my mouth doesn't, but I find that other artist (most of the time) translate what my mind is thinking.
Many years ago I entered one of my paintings in a show, Mary Todd Beam was the judge. I was amazed when she talked about my painting, it was like she entered my mind.

Went away for the long weekend, NC< took loads of photos.
I cleaned both my hummingbird feeders and put them out, in a matter of seconds, they came a swarming.

OK, I know what kind of lizard the top one is but have no idea about the other.
In south Florida we call the bigger lizard a Jesus lizard, they walk on water, some people call them Cuban lizard.
The smaller lizard, ?.! Looks like a cross between a lizard and alligator or snake.

Well, I am not enjoying the stock market, and before all my inheritance is gone, I thought I would buy me a car. A 1953, MGTD. I have always wanted this car. My first car was a MG 11000, I borrowed the money from my grandmother to buy it, paid her back every week. Worked really hard for that car. My parents worked really hard for this one, I think they would approve. My mother would have loved to go to lunch in this car.

Check out the books I made, not bad for being out of it all weekend with a migraine headache. How bout that stitching!!!!! We used regular paper for the inside (signature) and inside the little book I made wraps for each signature to match the pretty paper, outside. The instructor was wonderful - Joyce Sievers.

Dahlonega, Georgia

I took a bookbinding class at the Campbell School over Memorial weekend, it was so much fun. Made three books, two came out really nice, the third was a bit lopsided.
On our drive home we drove through a small town in Georgia, called Dahlonega. I have visited this town before and really loved it. On Memorial Day the town put up flags and crosses with the names of the fallen soldiers, back to World War One. I gotta tell you it brought tears to our eyes. What a wonderful tribute. Gotta love those small towns.

I went to the hand doctor yesterday about my little finger, (I had a fall last month and my little finger made a right turn, ) I have to keep my two fingers bandaged for a month, go back in a month. While I was at the doctors I showed him the palms of my hand, he said that I had Dupuytren's Disease. Check out - http://DealingWithDD.com There are injection that can help. It tends to run in families. It is more common in individuals whose ancestors are from northern Europe. Now I know what is wrong with my brothers hands.

Lakeland, Florida, what a beautiful place, although it is very hot there. The lake is full of swans and ducks and the homes and the oak trees, wonderful. The swan pictured above was white with tan, I don't know whether it was a young one or a different varity.

My little friend comes each day-takes my food then runs away-not caring what anyone says-hanging around without a care. Doesn't work or pay the bill-all he wants is his fill.

The birds come first to see if it's safe-then little friend comes in for the chase-takes the food and runs away-eating along the way-spilling seeds for later that day. Making sunflowers you might say, where there is a will there is a way!

While out strolling with one of our dogs< I happened to notice a flock of birds. They looked like black Ibis, I always thought Ibis were white, except for the young ones. I will have to check that out.

The picture was taken at a nearby park, this park, the one that use to be a dump. It has been turned into a beautiful park, with playgrounds, kite flying, a horse corral & trail, model airplane strip, even the people that fly those one seated, little motor, wing thingies that fly strip.

Jerry calls me a "button pusher" While fooling around with my new purse size camera, it took on a mind of its own=it shot this photo all by itself. Think it's trying to tell me something, like clean up this stuff. The painting on the wall is something I did awhile back, it is called "Moo Cow" the little fish painting I did about a month ago and framed it with a wooden ruler.

Wanted to post a photo on the other blog but the computer has a mind of its own too, go figure.

This weekend Jer is showing some of his stuff at a wine and food thingy in West Palm Beach. Nice part is that it's going to be inside and we will probably use only the pedestals. :) Of course it has wine and food and that is another plus.

Jerry and I just celebrated our anniversary last month, lota years. Had the reception in our back yard, a beautiful windy day in February. Jerry was in the service at the time, so had to plan the wedding around him being home.
L-R My brother, father, sister, Jerry, me, Mother, grandmother and my grandfather. Still have the dress, size nothing and the veil I made myself, Corny. The train on the dress was so beautiful that I was wanting to come down the isle backwards. The train was the reason that I bought a short sleeve dress for a Feb. wedding, what was I thinking!!!!!! The day was windy and a bit chilly, I was told.

Took this picture on Sunday when we had all those birds in the tree.

It's cold out this morning, 60 degrees out back, seems colder and looks like it is going to snow. Even Birdie, our African Grey parrot thinks it is cold. As I came in from out back- she says, "It's cold out there" she is right, had to turn the heat back on. Yesterday was a picture perfect day, never know.

What a productive day it was yesterday. We are finishing up the kitchen, still have to paint. I did some much needed weeding. The end of the day we had the birds fly in. Birds everywhere, it was kidda strange, thought maybe they were trying to tell us something. I guess they were just saying, it's warmer, hot diggity dog lips!

The Legend of the spring

Visited Andersonville prison - My mother always told the story of her, I think it was her Great Grandfather, was in the Andersonville prison and when he came home he was so weak that he died. I have always wanted to visit and finally did. Very emotional, especially the POW museum, with videos, photos etc.

Photo 2 - The legend-the prisoners had little water and what they did have was contaminated, one night there was a very bad storm and lightning hit the ground and water started to flow from an underground spring.

Photo 1-This picture, the soldiers graves are further apart than the Civil War Prisoners. The prisoners were placed shoulder to shoulder.

Kitchen

Starting to get excited about the kitchen, not really liking the dust and all the insulation in the attic,that is now all over the house. Went to Home Depot and pick up some paint samples, to much to choose from. Lovin color but really like the neutrals, we will see. I can't go to overboard, Jerry is finally use to the Bougainvillea and mustard in the bedroom and the lavender and green in the studio.

Motley Crowd tis is- Thanksgiving 2008
-Before Hurricane Wilma, we always had our gatherings outside-We had a screened in patio, never rained, always beautiful weather. Things change, but they somehow remain the same. We are redoing our kitchen, I am busy unpacking cupboards, going to be so different. Thanksgiving won't be at our house this year. Gonna miss this old kitchen.

Flamingo

I really don't think a person can take a bad picture of the Flamingo. They are so BEAUTIFUL! The date doesn't do much for the photo, but a least it matches and she looks like she doesn't mind. I am so fortunate to live near an aviary with such wonderful birds. (the Flamingo aren't in the aviary, there not going anywhere. The black birds got in during hurricane Wilma and they won't leave. The ones on the outside are really trying hard to get in.

Another Exercise

Another Exercise-

While I was looking for something, I found something else, (easily distracted) An excersie that I did many years ago, a painting out of a collage.

The figure on the right was a quick collage I did on orange construction paper, taking stuff out of magazines, my first attempt at collage. It was so much fun that I figured that I would do a painting of the collage, taking white watercolor paper, add a few more touches and woola. (watercolor and gouache) It was fun to do.

I can see with this photo I could darken some of the shadows, maybe, nay!

Of course, I didn't find what I was looking for because posting this was more fun.

Everglades Blackbirds II

Some more stuff. Yesterdays painting, had a little Asian flair, sooooooooo, I wanted to show off this piece that I bought years ago at an antique show. It is wood and has the characters names below their faces. I'm thinking it might be from a play. I love it, looks like black Birdie does too, or maybe that's the director, go figure.

Today I am going to start my 2nd painting "Crows that hang out in the Everglades" , maybe I will make it alittle funky.

Just finished up my bird painting, watercolor and a little bit of colored crayon for highlights.

How do you like the way I signed my name, hope it is correct. The painting looks somewhat Asian, simple, well as simple as I can make it. I like to use patterning, maybe the next one.

Since I am not going to be attending the workshop, I have to stop feeling sorry for myself and do some paintings. So here it goes, my first of my series of everglade birds, hope it won't be the last.

These shots were taken at a car event we attended last weekend. The little fellow would take the dog food and douse the food in the water.

The top photo-was taken Friday, not a very good photo, but I thought it told a story about the weather. When I bought out the peanuts, it was a different story, they were almost eating out of my hand. The bottom photo was taken from the inside out.

I just started following Abe Lincolns http://mybirdsblog.blogspot.com/ with his amazing bird photos, WoW. He inspired me so much that I actually started my blackbird series last night. Haven't shared those photos yet, thought I would go over the steps, maybe, to the finish. The post might be on the second Thursday of the week.

I paint and draw intuitively, so this idea might not work. I draw something out and the painting looks so different than my thoughts.

Birdee (my Africa Gray) is very talkative this morning, asked what I was doing. I wouldn't put it past her if she started her own blog, hmmmm, that's a thought. Cats and dogs do it!

Beautiful Day

Friday we had such hot weather, then Saturday the cold front hit, got down in the low 60's. Sunday we went to Hollywood beach, another perfect day. Forgot my camera, next time.
We ate at a little place on the inter coastal, "Le Tub" http://www.theletub.com/ we use to go there all the time, (winter only) the kitchen is maybe 6 X 6, but they turn out some really good food. The decor is stuff the owner has found on the beach over the years.

While the people up north are enjoying the colder weather and the changing of the leaves, I am busy cleaning my patio. It has been too hot to enjoy, won't be long till we're outside eating a good meal. Going to get my kitchen redone, so I will have to get out the George Forman Grill or uncover the Barbee.

Art Show Weekend!

Unpacking from the weekend art show-This was the hottest weekend of my life, in a daze all weekend, then when packing up it started to rain, that put me into ditsy overload. (more than usual) On the way home, of course we missed our exit and had to backtrack, wellllllllllllllll by then I was freezing from being soaked by the rain, luckily I had a jacket in the van. I did get a few stares at the rest stop, 100 degrees and this nut is wearing a jacket. (Oh well, it gave them something to talk about)

The highlight of the weekend were our neighbors, Jeff Eckert, http://jeffeckert.com/ his drawings were wonderful and he was a laugh a minute. My prize- I Traded one of Jerry's pieces for a BEAUTIFUL painting of an old basket, by Joe Krawczy- http://art@krawczykstudio.com/index.html Joe and Sherry were our cattycorner neighbors, at the Winter Park Art Show (Florida) I really don't have any wall space, but the painting is so beautiful, that I will find a place! Sherry, Joe's wife, is a wonderful artist, but was not showing her art at this show, She is a hoot. One wonderful artist was handing out water so we wouldn't pass out, and toward the end of the show, a fellow, all deck out with his kilt skirt on was handing out snacks for the ride home, I think he was from the Smoothie Booth, (or an Angel) Thanks, you made the ride home fingerlicking good. Oh, I almost forgot, how could I, Herbert Hofer, who had our booth as one of his destinations. He also kept us laughing, he made his rounds.
Sherry and I were talking about artist, I mentioned Klimt and Hunterwasser as being some of my favorites.
Started this painting a number of years ago. Keep adding little stuff. Kidda a metamorphose. Can you tell I kidda like Gustav Klimt.

I love Color, shapes, and he avoids theory, he used the senses. I like his flamboyant style, and read that critics went crazy, they thought his art should be logical. Oh well, that's what ya get for thinking!

Beyond the Art Show!

We had an art show this weekend (see his stuff at jersuzstuff.blogspot.com) not a big crowd, think everyone in Florida were at the beach. Jerry won a BLUE RIBBON and sold! Turned out to be a beautiful weekend, and we got out of the yard.

Now have to unpack and repack for next weedends show in Winter Park, Florida.

Sometime I doodle beyond the jounal, this piece is called "Shadows" I remember my teacher in elemetary school let us use a woodburner to make our mothers a mothers day gift. Can you imagine that today.

Then labels became groups and most "Artist"/people do not like to be Labeled

My work is me, my thoughts, feelings, emotions, just me, and am different at different times. If I was grouped I guess I would, be "Excontimrealcubcolorsionism" but that's a really big word, maybe I will stick with Susan.

I really love patterning-Birds-Trees-symbols I PUT IT ALL IN THIS PAINTING> Many layers.

Have Loved this old barn since we bought our place in NC. In July when my grandson and I were in NC I noticed it leaning and knew it wouldn't be long.

So I wanted to get a photo of it before it was gone.
Took this shot on Sat.the 5th of Sept. and it was still smoldering Sunday night, didn't go down without a fight.

Hope the owner saved some of the old wood.

When I was there, I opened up my journal and found a flower that I put in there on my last visit. Thought it was so pretty and didn't have a whole lot of time to think this morning, so thought I would post something simple.

It's been 3 years ago today that my mother passed away. I am so blessed to have had such wonderful parents, and wonder do you ever get over the pain of losing parents.

My mother was 94 when this photo was taken.

MOTHER

My Mom would complain about those ducks

we would say, stop feeding them and they'll go away. She would not listen, so they would stay

After she passed they came around for awhile, but then again so did I.

Every evening she would sit on the back porch and watch the birds and recite the poem The Childrens Hour by HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW

Between the dark and the daylight,

When the night is beginning to lower,

Comes a pause in the day's occupations

That is know as the Children's Hour.

I hear in the chamber above me

The patter of little feet,

The sound of a door that is opened,

From my study I see in the lamplight,

I loved that poem, especially the last two paragraphs

My mother loved to read, and always read to us. She also kept a journal, her granny taught her that. She kept a journal up until the day she passed, at 94. I have one of her dairies from her high school days. She wrote "We went to the bank today, and the bank had no money" from that experience she learned to manage money. She worked very hard, taking care of her Grandparents. She would pick berries and gather eggs to sell at the local feed store.

She married our Dad, who was just as wonderful as she was. She just couldn't live without him. We were and are so blessed.

Turning Things - These two paintings were done when I just painted with pure watercolor, then the watercolor clubs went water media and I started to accumulate stuff. Every time I would win an award or sell a painting, I would buy more stuff. Now I can't keep up with the STUFF.

Yesterday I mentioned (on the other blog) that I love drawing & painting faces, either realistic or impressionistic, animal or human. I use to enter my slides in shows, many moons ago. These paintings, I received awards and it started me off on a series of Turnings. I had Turning Cowgirl heads, turning horses, birds, all types of turnings. I was inspired by my daughter. She is and was a multi-task person, she is so that way that she makes my head spin. I stretched her face, because she is stretched in many directions. A mother, a wife, a business person, maintaining all her animals. The horse painting was the same thought- A painting of my horse "Bunch" a horse that was so hyper, he use to let himself out of his stall, even when it was latched, ooooooooooooo, that reminds me of our dogs! Do I see another series after all these years!

Now Jerry is in to the turning, but it is on a lathe.

My Secret Garden

My secret Garden, not so secret anymore. Jer and I worked this weekend on building an arbor. Ive been collecting branches since I took a workshop from Jo Kilmer. Had to pull weeds, cut back the bamboo, cut some of my herbs etc.
I put the pond in after hurricane Wilma destroyed our deck. That was 3 years ago, digging the hole was no easy task. We live on a coral reef near the everglades. I have been letting the herbs and plants kidda take over since I put in the pond, so in order to see our new arbor I had to cut back.(wonder how long that's going to last. The wood is a combo of citrus and carrot wood. Had a hard rain last night, went out this morning and the arbor is still together.

Not bad for our first try. Jerry sawed some branches that I wanted left on, I kept telling him, Florida Rustic. Next one will have the angled top, it was so hot yesterday that we both were tired out.

The girls and I put up those tents, wasn't an easy task. Then at night the Peacocks started in on there screaming, wow, what a flash back, camping trip from hell. That's what makes memories and we have loadS of them

Family went a camping
What were we thinking
Motor home was a cruising
ZZ Top on the radio
What fun we were having
until the propane tank was a falling
and it went a flying
unhitched the dump tank hose
and that was just the beginning of our woes
tire it was ripping
What shall we do
propane tank a fuming
tuned off the nozzle
and being just a bit frazzled
put back the hose
Turned on the radio
and JUST STARTED CRUSING

Fooling around with Microsoft Picture it.

Wanted to post something today, so here it is.

This is a photo of a painting. I take pictures of my work in progress. I like this better than the finished painting. Tomorrow I will take a photo of the finished painting, if I can find it. I put stuff away for a year or two, then find it, and finish it, or paint a little, then put it away again. Lots of layers, always changing my mind.

Oh, I found it, now where is my camera. I knew I shouldn't have organized things.

While reading another blog, about the Ozark mountains, I thought about my road trip out west to where my parents grew up.

One of our stops was Eureka Springs, Arkansas, right close to where my mother grew up and visited.

What a great Artsy Fa-tsy place, liked it so much we visited it on the way up and back. Stayed in a bed and breakfast on the way up and on the way back, stayed at an old (1886) Crescent Hotel, ya know it's haunted. Didn't see any ghost, at least I don't think so.

Light coming through the door

afternoon and rainy

a touch of light hits the floor

shadows cast, chairs sitting straight

casting more shadows

reminds me of a Hopper painting

solitude, lonely shadows

negative and positives, muted colors

light has cast a walkway

to invite you to follow

but ending at the door, teasing the visitor

Look out to see more

leave your pathway behind like it never existed

too tempting not to explore
